Fundraising moves up a gear

Fundraising for the restoration of St Nicholas Church, Radford Semele has moved up a gear now that a target figure of £90000 has been established.

The church was extensively damaged as a result of an arson attack on Palm Sunday 2008. The skeletal four walls and bell tower remain but the only salvageable item from the inside was the Collection Plate – God has a sense of humour!

A Fundraising Group has been set up to co-ordinate the many offers of help that have been received and the first major event was held on Saturday 15th May at the Community Hall in Radford Semele when the Village Voices Choir presented “An entertaining look at the Journey of Life” to a large and appreciative audience.

The Village Voices Choir, founded in 1995, raises money each year for a number of local charities by donating the proceeds of their concerts.

To set the mood, the Choir began with The Entertainer and moved musically through different stages of life, from Teddy Bears Picnic to Now it’s time to leave, taking in songs from the shows, an African medley, the topical Over the rainbow sung by musical director Clare Langstone (“could Clare be Dorothy?!”) and concluding with a rousing rendition of Razzle Dazzle!

A very entertaining evening which raised over £700 towards the target – only £89300 to go!

Regeneration the DVD

Alan Jones is gathering material for a DVD which records the history of the church, the fire and the restoration and up to the reopening of the church. It is hoped to film as many future fund raising efforts for the restoration as possible. All proceeds from the DVD will go to the Restoration Fund.

Alan is still looking for photos and film of the church and its activities from the past-especially pre World War II. Also pictures of Sunday School are of internet. Specially, does anyone have a photograph of the Rev. Laurie Parsons and the Rev. Blount?

If you have any media or if you are organising an event, please contact Alan on Great care will be taken with your memorabilia.

If you would like to be kept informed about progress, your details can be put on sheets available at services in the future. This will not commit you to buying a copy of the DVD but will give some idea of the interest.

A word about fund-raising

We have started a small fund-raising group, and ideas are already coming in for ways to help raise this target. If you would like to be involved in that group, or have ideas for doing a fund-raising event, please contact Don Simpson on 01926 426652.

If you have been waiting to find out how much we need to raise before making a donation, then please make any donations payable to “St Nicholas Restoration Fund” – and if you are able to Gift Aid it, we can receive an added bonus from the Government !

Thank you again for your support, and please continue to be creative and inspired as we begin the next stage of raising funds and setting the detail. As we have looked back with great sadness at all we lost in the fire, I hope that we will all now begin to look forward with excitement to what is to come.
